It is called the "Island City," due to a portion of the town being situated on an actual island, which is accessible by bridge on Highway 51. Latitude: 45.85 N, Longitude: 89.83 W. It is 107.8 miles N.E. of Eau Claire, WI and 297.1 miles N.W. of Chicago, IL. The nearest city to Minocqua with a population of 200,000+ is St Paul, MN which is 171 miles S.W.
History
Originally established in 1888 as a logging town, Minocqua's hertitage is rooted in the Ojibwe tribe which is still honored today through museums, traditional pow-wows and crafting classes. In the early 1900s, as the logging industry declined, the Minocqua area with its pristine fishing and recreation opportunities became a popular destination for vacation resorts.
