History

Fishing at night by torch light was common practice by the Ojibwe Indians here in the northwoods. French fur traders named this area Lac du Flambeau which means 'Lake of the Torches'. Logging began here in 1885 but it wasn't until June 5th, 1900 that this busy loggers town was officially established. During the early 1900s the logging industry here peaked and with it's departure the locals depended on vacation resorts. Visitors from the Midwest cities were attracted to the lakes within the Lac du Flambeau area and it has become a popular vacation retreat. The town has maintained its cultural heritage through the implementation of dual governments. The Town is governed under the Wisconsin State Statues and the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians are federally recognized as a sovereign Indian nation. Tribal land and issues of its members are governed by tribal law. The two governments work together when issues affect the entire community.
