History

Tracing back to the 17th century, the traders in this area were regulated by the French Government. By the 1800s the name St. Germain has appeared many times in records as leaders among the Chippewa. Even though there wasn't a Chief St. Germaine, there is a Chief St. Germaine statue which honors not only the many French Indian families who had this name but it also commemorates all Indians who lived and hunted in the area. The first settlers were loggers, trappers and millers. In 1907 the town was established as the Town of Farmington. It was expected that farming would flourish with the decline of logging however due to the short growing season those expectations were not reasonable. Good fishing, better roads and of course the spectacular scenery attracted tourists and the name of the town was changed to Lakewood but on June 20th, 1930 it was changed to St. Germain.
