Sayner and its neighbor Star Lake encompass the township of Plum Lake where "Everything of Beauty is Better Shared".

This small scenic area is a treasure trove of activities which include the Plum Lake Golf course, trails of the rolling Razorback Ridges, exhibits at the Vilas Historic museum and Olympic quality tennis courts. Naturally there is also boating, fishing, water skiing, snow skiing and snowmobile trails.

Endowed with tranquil beauty and small town charm this area is ideal for exploring, sporting, or simply relaxing.

Location

The land area of Sayner is 1.8 square miles in Vilas County. Latitude: N/A, Longitude: N/A. It is located at the intersection of Hwy 155 and County N, about 15 miles N.W. of Eagle River.

History

Plum Lake was the center of the lumber industry during the 19th century. As WWI was beginning, lumbering was waning. The grandeur of the area lakes and forest attracted tourists and sportsmen. Orrin W. Sayner, founder of the town, built the first simple buildings for vacationers in 1892 which would later become the Froelich's Sayner Lodge. The first post office was established in the kitchen of the main lodge. In 1899 Mr. Warner, a lumberman and resort owner, donated 40 acres and cash to help establish the Plum Lake Golf Course and in 1912 the Plum Lake Golf Club was founded. It is the oldest 9-hole course in Wisconsin with a par 36 and open to the public. The first snowmobile was invented in 1924 by Carl Eliason in his Sayner shop which is on display with other incredible artifacts at the Vilas County Historical museum founded in 1959.
